This will be a day of exploring wildlife habitat, all within a few miles of Belize City. Your adventure will start just 30 miles from Belize City on the Western Highway at the Belize Zoo. Here, every species is placed in habitats that are similar to what their natural surroundings would be if they were still in the wild. Birds fly high in natural, enclosed canopies. Crocodiles lounge about in pools made just for them. The magnificent Jabiru Stork stakes its claim to lots of space and may even fluff its huge wingspan for a show. The Jaguar, Mountain Lion, and other wild cats blend into space provided for them and may come out for amazing photo opportunities.
Here you can get a look at the national animal, the Tapir (Mountain Cow), and smell why the peccary has its own place in the Belize Kriol language. You will feel as if you are truly in the jungles of Belize.
The Belize Zoo is small with a big heart. It’s a fun individual and family trip. After being won over by this little zoo and the exotic flora and fauna, you’ll head to the tiny village of Bermudian Landing to visit The Community Baboon Sanctuary. Founded in 1985 the aim of the sanctuary was to show farmers in the area that protecting the habitat of the Black Howler Monkey could bring sustainability to the village. Your guide will show you the monkeys up close as they scamper in the tree canopies above and across rope suspensions bridges throughout the village. You won’t miss the howl of this small monkey that sounds like it’s coming from a much bigger animal.
