Xunantunich and the  Inland Bluehole

Xunantunich is a national treasure and Belize’s second-largest ruin, making it a must-visit even during short trips. As you approach San Jose Succotz, you will see the little falls of the Mopan River winding along the road.

Many vendors sell souvenirs, hammocks, and blankets alongside the river where you board the hand-cranked ferry that has carried thousands to and from this Maya temple. The climb/drive up to Xunantunich begins on the other bank of the river.

The panoramic aerial views from atop ‘El Castillo’ can go on for miles and create the perfect opportunities for selfies and group photos. The wide-open ranges offer a lovely backdrop for proposals and weddings. In addition, they have served as a location for a few films and telenovelas. The temples are nestled between lush rainforests whose trees may bloom vibrant red, yellow, orange, or pink in season.

When you’re done exploring the area, you’ll take a dip in the Inland Blue Hole. There is no explanation for how the Inland Blue Hole appeared since it is a hundred-foot-deep sinkhole. However, this pristine pool carries a deep blue color and makes for a very refreshing dip despite its name. The tour package includes one hour of swimming and hiking in the park, where you can see the beautiful wildlife of western Belize.
